Luxury watchmaker Hublot reveals commemorative Bitcoin watch
Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot has announced the creation of a watch commemorating the ten year anniversary of the release of Bitcoin’s whitepaper.
The watch, called the Big Bang Blockchain, can only be purchased with cryptocurrency, and will be released in an edition of 210, a nod to the number of bitcoins (21 million) that will ever exist. Each timepiece will include a unique engraving of the identification number of the purchase transaction, further paying homage to the underlying technology of Bitcoin.
Bitcoin’s whitepaper, written under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, was released on October 31st, 2018, making this Halloween the ten year anniversary of what is widely considered the birth of Bitcoin. The first block of bitcoin, however, was mined two months later, on January 3rd, 2009, officially releasing the currency into the world.
As per the company’s press release on September 19th, Hublot seems to appreciate the value that Bitcoin and, more broadly, blockchain technology brought to the world:
“By allowing digital information to be distributed, Blockchain technology creates the backbone of a new type of Internet. Well-recognised for its originality, the technology is regarded as one of the most powerful and fastest-growing trading tools, not to mention unlimited possibility of usage in different aspects that will revolutionise various industry norms and trade.”
However, it appears that Hublot also feels a sort of kinship with the innovation underlying Bitcoin:
“A forerunner at heart and in action, HUBLOT fully supports those who also admire avant-gardism, pursue innovativeness and reckon upon forging a new order for the world.”
Indeed, Hublot has enjoyed its own history of technological advancement in its own field. Originally designed by the watchmaker Jean-Claude Biver, the first Hublot Big Bang timepiece was released in April 2004. The Big Bang won the “Best Design” award at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2005, and has enjoyed considerable commercial success.
To distribute the watch, Hublot has partnered with Hong Kong-based Octagon Strategy Limited (OSL), the leading digital asset brokerage in Asia, which offers OTC trading, market making, and bespoke services like marketing promotion and token distribution. OSL will act as the exclusive broker for the sale, handling data processing and payment, while Hublot will deliver the watches directly to the customer.
The presale of the timepiece began on September 19th and runs through October 29th. Payment will be made on October 31st based on the exchange rate of Bitcoin (BTC). Fittingly, delivery of the watches will begin on January 3rd.
Customers must register directly through a page on the Hublot website to pre-order the watch.
